Seed Potato varietal evaluation trials by Hayleys Agro Farms (Pvt) Limited - May 2022
Hayleys Agro Farms (Pvt) Limited, in collaboration with Den Hartigh Germany, local authorities, and the farming community, commenced Seed Potato varietal evaluation trials in February this year. Several locations in Nuwara Eliya were selected for this program. The trials were conducted with the objective of finding solutions to the current issues in the production chain with an overaching objective of achieving an ambitious goal of 40Mt/ha. In 1994, Hayleys Agro Farms (Pvt) Limited introduced the popular Seed Potato variety Granola to Sri Lanka, which can withstand a multitude of weather conditions whilst still producing a high yield. The team at Hayleys Agro Farms (Pvt) Limited provides technical advice to farmers, allowing the company to cater to the Seed Potato segment consistently over the past 15 years.

Hayleys Agriculture installs another four Modern Pivot Irrigation Systems at NLDB Ridiyagama Farm - February 2021
Hayleys Agriculture in association with AGRICO installed another four modern Pivot Irrigation Systems which would enable the farm ensure irrigation of 60 Acres hassle free whilst enabling mechanization of the fields. The first system was installed in the farm in March 2020. The NLDB Ridiyagama Farm requires 70MT of fodder per day to feed the livestock and most of this is procured from external sources. Hence the management now wishes to cultivate Sorghum and Maize across the year to fulfill a portion of this fodder requirement. However, since the Farm is situated in the Dry Zone, supplementary irrigation is vital to enable year round cultivation.

Hayleys Agriculture Conducts Training for Potato Farmers in Nuwaraeliya District – September 2020
Hayleys Agriculture recently conducted a one-day training programme for 121 Potato Farmers in Nuwaraeliya District on 25th of September 2020 with the aim of educating the farmers on good practices to increase productivity while making them aware of recommended high-yielding varieties for the area. Protoft, Meemale, Kandalawa, Kachimale are some of the remote areas in Nuwara eliya district where farmers grow up-country vegetables; mainly Potato using traditional farming practices. A few high-yielding Potato varieties namely Granola, Amany, Edison, Papageno, Royal and Laperla were introduced and farmers were educated on selecting the best variety based on the market requirement and field conditions. The participants were educated on making Potato chips and French fries as a mean of value addition at the domestic level believing that these trainings would help future entrepreneurs to embark on self-employment ventures.

The training programme on "Safe and Efficient Use of Crop Protection Products" conducted by Hayleys Agriculture Training School (HATS) team on the 31st of July 2020 at Nahakadiya, Welimada for vegetable and potato farmers consisted of practical demonstrations of how to wear and remove personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately, and the safety precautions that should be taken when using crop solutions in spray tanks for their crops. The efficient use of crop protection products was very much part of the agenda of the full day’s programme.

Hayleys Agriculture and CLC today (16th July) signed an MOU where CLC will offer leasing packages to farmers under a special scheme to lease HAHL agri machinery at concessionary rate of down payment and interest. CLC will offer this special scheme to promote Kubota, Farmtrac and Agrotec machinery through their 65 branch network established throughout the island. This special scheme will be valid till June next year.

For the fourth consecutive year Hayleys Agriculture Holdings Limited, the agriculture arm of Hayleys PLC provided all the students of Sarakkugala Primary School with exercise books, uniform material, a school bag and other essential items for the upcoming school term in the new year. A tree-planting ceremony followed after the handing over of gift items to the children. Sarakkugala Primary School is situated in Nochchiyagama Divisional Secretariat in the Anuradhapura District, of North Central Province, Sri Lanka. There are 109 students from Grade 1- Grade 6. In 2018 for the first time in the school’s history, it was able to produce two students who got through the year 5 scholarship examination, and in this year 2019 one student has got through the exam.

Kubota Japan conducts training program for technical staff of Hayleys Agriculture - August 2019
Kubota Corporation, Japan recently conducted an extensive technical training program for technicians and supervisors of Agri Equipment Division of Hayleys Agriculture. The training program was specifically on the Kubota tractor Model L3408. Technicians were briefed on the finer points of repair and trouble-shooting of Kubota model L3408. Two specialists from Kubota Japan were the main resource persons who carried out the training and Two 4-day training programs were conducted for two separate batches.

A group 49 low- income families in Palachchenai area after successful cultivation of cucumber on testing basis, in an initiative projected to Hayleys Agriculture Holdings Limited, received dividends to a record value of Rs 7 million. The project proved an immense success and warranted a record income of Rs 7 million after Hayleys PLC came forward buy the entire stock of the harvest from farmers. In May of this year, the project signed an agreement with Hayleys PLC for 500 farmers (starting with 70 farmers) to grow green cucumbers under a buy-back system. With the buy-back programme in place, Hayleys purchased the cucumber at Rs. 27 per kilo and given that the cucumbers were being used for pickles, etc.

At the request of the National Institute of Education, Hayleys Agriculture Training School, a training institution registered under the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC), imparted the best global practices of agriculture and the latest technologies to 60 A/Level Agriculture Science Teachers. The training programme consisted of the following sessions: agricultural pest and disease management and chemistry; agricultural mechanization; agricultural irrigation systems and protected houses; drone technology; and electro-static spraying (ESS) technology. A MoU was signed between the Flower Growers’ Association of the Uva province and Hayleys Company ensuring that the company will constantly purchase flowers from the growers at a steady price and that the company will provide the farmers with modern technology and equipment to increase the quality of flowers. The farmer association of ornamental flowers produce flowers of high quality for local and international markets with the assistance of Hayleys Company in Welimada, Uva Paranagama, and Haputhale Divisional Secretariats in the Badulla District. This agreement was signed in the presence of President Maithripala Sirisena at the Provincial Steering Committee Meeting on the ‘Gramashakthi’ program in Badulla on 21 May.
Jayanthi Dharmasena, first female director in 140 years at Hayleys PLC Board - April 2018
Top professional Jayanthi Dharmasena has become the first female director on the Board of diversified blue chip Hayleys PLC in its 140-year history. Jayanthi, who serves as the Managing Director of Hayleys Agriculture and its subsidiaries and as a Group Management Committee member, was appointed to the Board last week as an Executive Director. Hayleys PLC is controlled by business leader Dhammika Perera. Jayanthi has been a part of the Hayleys Group for 26 years and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK). Jayanthi Dharmasena is an alumnus of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo and a mother of two grownup sons. Jayanthi is also the granddaughter of the late Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara, the father of free education in Sri Lanka.

Flooding has been a constant climatic conundrum in Sri Lanka and has affected lives of many civilians throughout the past years. This year floods caused serious issues, displacing thousands of people and destroying their homes. Hayleys Agriculture together with Adcon Telemetry Austria is working towards the establishment of a countrywide Real-time Meteorological Information and Early Warning System in Sri Lanka under the theme ‘Remote Monitoring – for: Flood warning, Meteorology, Irrigation’. A recent workshop conducted by several stakeholders discussed the main issues revolving around climatic mishaps.

Continuing to expand and create a positive impact on nation’s growing CKD concern, the Hayleys Group’s Puritas SathDiyawara endeavour has now extended its clean drinking water project with two more RO plants. One plant was recently installed in Meegassegama, Thalawa, sponsored by Alumex PLC. The second plant was installed in Pahala Kedithokkuwa, Nochchiyagama, sponsored by Hayleys Agriculture, where in addition to the RO Plant, a mixed cultivation of fruits and moringa was also initiated with the expertise of Hayleys Agriculture, in a land owned by the CBO of Pahala Kedithokkuwa. Both villages were also gifted with a knowledge hub, consisting of computers with internet access and a library.

The aim of this workshop was to find out the feasibility of setting up a sea weed industry in Sri Lanka by bringing in all parties concerned, into one forum to see their joint interest in setting up industry from this long neglected renewable natural resource. The 1700 km long coastal belt of unpolluted sea coupled with rich biodiversity of over 572 species of seaweed offers a great potential for a seaweed industry in Sri Lanka.
Hayleys Agriculture “Jeevadhara” project for Murunga cultivation - January 2017
Committed to improving rural livelihood and nutrition through sustainable agricultural development, Hayleys Agriculture launched the ‘Jeevadhara’ programme to provide one million Moringa (Murunga/Drumstick) plants to families in Jaffna and neighboring areas of the Northern Province via a network of 100,000 out-growers. ‘Jeevadhara’ intends to enhance farmer incomes and livelihoods while creating a sustainable supply of pods and leaves for domestic consumption and value added exports. The project intends to reach 100,000 households in Jaffna, Killinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar and Vavuniya providing around 10 plants per household.
Hayleys Agriculture unveils DJI Agras agriculture drones in Sri Lanka - December 2016
The research and development arm of Hayleys Agriculture Holdings Limited in collaboration with DJI training service provider, Guangdong Guo-An Intelligent Aviation Technology Co. Ltd conducted a workshop on the operation and maintenance of the DJI Agras MG-1 agriculture drone, and carried-out a series of field trials at pre-approved locations within the group’s plantation sector to assess the drone’s ariel spraying capabilities in challenging terrains and elevations. The drone is dustproof, water-resistant and made of anti-corrosive material. Its four replaceable nozzles are each powered by separate motors and the drone can be folded for easy storage and transportation.
